So… Wow.
Sometimes, I go to the movies because I’m dragged to go. Last week, it was “Night at the Museum 2,” which I found to be a moderately likable, if not probably forgettable, advertisement for the Smithsonian.
I guess in an age where there are cameras everywhere in Washington, the idea that the Lincoln Statue comes to life and nobody notices, or that you can take Jonah Hill’s badge and get down to where they keep the Declaration of Independence a little ludicrous.
So the fact that a movie about an old man who launches his house into the sky with balloons had more humanity and story logic to it than the live action one with Ben Stiller does not go unnoticed.
I loved this movie.
There was so much in there – Comedy, sure. But depth of character, purity of heart, a reality to getting older and life’s disappointments. And a talking dog.
I saw the movie yesterday. Parts of it linger with me today. All that from what could have been a pretty mindless romp about a crotchity old man and his balloon-powered house.
Kudos.
