So, needless to say, there’s been a robust debate on this. Here’s my favorite today:
“I’m not exactly sure how you can be black by choice, since that is also a protected class. I don’t entirely understand how the term protected class infers some sort of choice.
Steve MarmelI wonder: Are you missing my point or making it for me?
No, you can’t be black by choice. You also, I believe, cannot be gay by choice. You can, however, convert to a different religion and then be protected from discrimination over it.
So, either:
You agree that gay is a choice, like converting to Judaism or Christianity and you want to protect those people and if so, you should want to protect gay people from that same discrimination.
OR you agree that gay is NOT a choice, like being black, and you want to protect them from discrimination for those reasons.
What you can’t do is agree that religion (which can be a choice) or race (which isn’t) deserves protection in the workplace while denying it to homosexuals. That’s hypocrisy at best, and homophobia at worst.
Every argument about why this is okay is flawed.
And every year Hollywood gives credence to a state that would fire some of it’s best and brightest because of their sexual orientation is equally flawed.
